The Oro Valley Police Department Citizen Academy is a 36-hour block of
instruction designed to give the public knowledge of the Oro Valley Police
Department. It consists of ten classes, which are held once a week from 6 - 9 p.m. The classes are free. The instruction is
comprehensive and each week a different area of the Department is covered. Instruction is
provided by Sworn Police Personnel and Civilian Staff who work in the particular area
covered.
The slogan of the Citizen Academy is "Understanding Through Education"; and its
goal is to provide the citizens who attend enough information to dispel suspicions and
misconceptions and to increase rapport through an educational process. The citizens, in
turn, enable the officers and civilian staff to learn of their feelings and concerns.
Lastly, the students are able to personally meet and talk with officers and civilian
support staff in the Department.
We hope the graduates of each Citizen Academy will take their new knowledge out into the
community, educate others when the opportunity arises and make decisions, which affect the
Police Department and the Town with heightened awareness and better information.
Covered in this course of study will be such
topics as: Patrol Functions, Communications, Community Policing, D.A.R.E., S.R.O.,
Property and I.D., Police Psychology, Criminal Investigations, Records, Traffic Accident
Investigation, D.U.I. Investigation, Internal Affairs, Traffic Enforcement, K-9, Gangs,
C.N.A. and S.W.A.T.
Standards for applicants are: at least 18 years of age, reside within the Town of Oro
Valley boundaries, never convicted of a Felony and never convicted of a misdemeanor
involving violence or weapons. Upon selection, each student will complete an application
form. Along with the necessary waiver, each applicant will be fingerprinted for a
