The Town of Oro Valley, Arizona was
incorporated in 1974 with 581 residence and covered only a few square
miles. Today the Town covers approximately 35 square miles with a
population of approximately 40,000 and includes over 163 miles of
paved roads. The Oro Valley Police Department employs 91 commissioned
officers, 43 officers are assigned to patrol and six (+ one Sergeant)
are assigned to the Motor Division. In 1999 the Motor Division grew
from three officers to seven due to the significant growth in road
construction and housing development.
It was in 1999 that the department changed from Kawasaki's to BMW
primarily due to the integrated ABS system BMW offered. The Motor
Division is responsible for traffic enforcement, traffic collisions,
patrol support, and a wide variety of special events including
marathons, and public festivities. The Department has a strong
'Community Policing' philosophy and partners with the community to
create a safer environment for the motoring public.
Each officer is issued a take-home BMW motorcycle, rain gear, "Kustom"
lidar, and other equipment specific to the duty of a motor officer.
The division is required to maintain proficiency by attending a
quarterly eight
hour in-service training. Hours of operation are weekdays covering
from 0500-2000 hours. The Motor Division takes great pride in riding
excellence, sharp appearance, integrity, and professionalism. |
